Dr. Art Epstein


Arthur B. Epstein, OD, FAAO, FABCO, FBCLA, DPNAP is a native New Yorker who grew up in the Bronx, NY; later moving to Great Neck on Long Island, NY. He graduated from the City College of New York, CUNY, with a B.S. in psychology and received an O.D. degree from the State University of New York, State College of Optometry were he also served as the college's first resident in ocular disease.

He is a founding partner of North Shore Contact Lens & Vision Consultants, P.C., a referral based contact lens and primary eye care practice on Long Island.  After relocating to Phoenix, AZ.  Dr. Epstein co-founded Phoenix Eye Care, PLLC with his wife, Dr. Shannon Steinhäuser.  Dr. Epstein heads the practice’s Dry Eye - Ocular Surface Disease Center and serves as its Director of Clinical Research.

With internationally recognized expertise in complex contact lens management and an acknowledged expert on the medical complications of contact lenses, dry eye, and anterior segment disease Dr. Epstein also serves as an Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor at Midwestern University, Arizona College of Optometry Eye Institute.

Dr. Epstein is a prolific author who has published many hundreds of articles, scientific papers and book chapters. He is a Contributing Editor for Review of Optometry and Executive Editor of Review of Cornea and Contact Lenses. He founded, and serves as Chief Medical Editor of Optometric Physician™, the first E-Journal in optometry. Dr. Epstein served on the Editorial Board of Eye & Contact Lens: Science and Clinical Practice, and as a reviewer for numerous journals including: Review of Optometry, Cornea, Optometry (JAOA), Optometry & Vision Science (OVS), Contact Lens & Anterior Eye (BCLA), Expert Review of Clinical Immunology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology (AJO) and the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology.

A sought after speaker, Dr. Epstein, has presented more than 1000 invited lectures on a variety of eye care topics  nationally and in more than 50 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and North and South America. During his travels, Dr. Epstein has served as an ambassador for US optometry visiting optometric organizations, schools and  colleagues throughout the world. He serves on the US National Committee for world-wide eye care organization Optometry Giving Sight.

With diverse interests and experience, Dr. Epstein actively consults for the eye care industry with notable expertise in marketing strategy, messaging and communication. He also has extensive experience as an expert witness and strategist in eye care litigation including serving as a plaintiff’s expert subsequent to the Fusarium keratitis outbreak and product recall.

His primary clinical and research interests include dry eye and ocular surface disease, contact lens and refractive surgery complications, therapeutic (medical) and specialty contact lenses, ocular allergy, and corneal ectatic conditions such as keratoconus and corneal ectasia post refractive surgery.

He is a Fellow of the British Contact Lens Association, a Distinguished Practitioner of the National Academies of Practice, a Fellow of the American and New York Academies of Optometry and a Full Member of the International Society of Contact Lens Specialists. He also belongs to the American Optometric Association, the AOA Contact Lens & Cornea Section, the Arizona Optometric Association, and served as founding Board of the American Optometric Society and founded and currently serves as President of the American Board of Clinical Optometry.

Dr. Epstein is a Past Chair of the Contact Lens & Cornea Section of the American Optometric Association and a founder and past President of the Optometric Dry Eye Society. He led and was a primary strategist of the American Optometric Association’s response to the international Fusarium keratitis outbreak and was frequently quoted in news media throughout the world including an appearance on Good Morning America. As Chair of the CLCS he spoke before the US Congress regarding contact lens safety.
